Abstract

“Hier ist Flamme und geheimster Uhrenschlag” – the rhetoric and philosophy of music in Ernst Bloch’s 'Geist der Utopie'

Ernst Bloch’s philosophy of music, as laid down in his 1918 book 'Geist der Utopie', is both a manifesto of expressionism and an existential address. The claim that this book is one of the secret springs of German twentieth-century thought is examined and defended.
