Abstract
The characterisation of a grammar formalism for natural languages defined in terms of the process of time-linear tree growth for interpretation explains syntactic topic and focus effects at the left and right periphery as consequences of basic tree growth processes, much as (Vallduvi, 1991), but without positing any additional level of structural representation.Article
