Con la publicación del libro virtual El género en historia, ILAS se propone abrir nuevas vías de intercambio intelectual entre latinoamericanos y latinoamericanistas, en todo el mundo. Internet adquiere importancia en las ciencias sociales: este texto ofrece una primera respuesta a la necesidad, cada vez mayor, de contar con materiales de fondo sobre temas de avanzada, que los investigadores, profesores y estudiantes de todo el mundo puedan utilizar, aun con acceso limitado a Internet.

Avanzar hacia una visión genérica de la historia es una de las corrientes intelectuales más notables de nuestro tiempo. El proyecto titulado El género en historia pretende integrar el mundo de habla hispana con más plenitud en este proceso.

La versión actual de El género en historia está corregida y actualizada. Este año nos proponemos agregar palabras claves, acceso por medio de mecanismos de búsqueda, vínculos con otros sitios, lista de comandos en inglés, un libro impreso acompañante (posiblemente en versión que se pueda bajar). Nuestro propósito es obtener que el texto sea más accesible y su uso, más fácil.

With the publication of the virtual text, El género en historia, ILAS aims to open new channels of intellectual exchange between Latin Americans and Latin Americanists worldwide. As the Internet becomes increasingly important to social science, this text is an initial response to a growing need for substantial materials on cutting-edge themes that can be utilised by researchers, teachers and students around the globe, even with limited Internet access.

The advance toward a gendered understanding of history is one of the notable intellectual currents of our times. The project El género en historia aims to make the Spanish-speaking world more fully part of that process.

El género en historia (Gender in History)

• presents an overview of the development of gender approaches over the last quarter century;
• describes and defines the analytical tools available to write history from a gender perspective;
• provides researchers, teachers and students with a rich corpus of reading material (scholarly studies by some three dozen authors, on a wide range of societies from classical antiquity to the twentieth century); and
• introduces recent teaching and research on the subject in Chile, where the publication was initially produced, based on some five years of teaching in a Chilean university.

During its pilot phase El género en historia appeared on an Internet website based in Chile. It received 3,400 visitors, from more than 50 countries (Pilot Phase: A Progress Report). While about one-third of users came from Chile and almost half from Latin America as a whole, the broad diversity of visitors from other regions demonstrates some of the potential of the Internet to draw together a global community interested in this subject.

The current version of El género en historia has been revised and updated. This year we plan to introduce key-words, access through search-engines, links with other websites, command selection in English, and a printed (possibly downloadable) companion book. Our goal is to make the publication more easily accessible and user friendly.

As a visitor to this new site, we welcome you to the growing intellectual community interested in these issues in Latin America and hope you will help us develop this next stage of the project.
