0 Annex II. EXISTING AND CONTEMPLATED FACILITIES. (a) Newfoundland. A civil airport provided with ground organisation essential for commercial air operation has been constructed at Hatties Camp for landplanes, and also a marine air base at Botwood for flying boats and an emergency alighting area at Gandar Lake. These facilities are located in the Bay of Exploits area. There is no intention of creating for civil aviation purposes a base on the Avalon Peninsula or on the south coast of Newfoundland. (*>) Bermuda. A flyingboat base for commercial operations has been made at Barrell Island and facilities there have been granted to Pan American Airways on a reciprocal basis. . (c) Eastern Side of Bahamas. There are no civil aviation facilities existing or in contemplation. (d) Jamaica. Pan American Airways are already in occupation of an air base at Harbour Head, Kingston. A land aerodrome is being constructed on the Pallioadoes, Kingston, ¦»—————1 (e) West Coast of St. Lucia. There is no suitaK.e site at St. Lucia for the construction of a land aerodrome. The most suitable area for seaplane operations is at Port Castries but in swell conditions Cul de Sac Bay or Gross Inelt Bay may have to be used as alternatives. As the island is small, the question of facilities for the projected inter-island service must be considered in the light of the detailed proposals of the United States Government. (f) Trinidad. Present air facilities consist of the flying boat base used by Pan American Airways at Cocorite Bay (the water area of which has been declared a Government aerodrome), and of a land aerodrome at Piarco, the latter being capable of development to Air Ministry standard requirements. (g) Antigua. The Port of St. Johns is an excellent site for seaplane operations and is in use by Pan American Airways as a refuelling base*, A site for a land aerodrome exists just east of Port St. Johns. The Chiefs of Staff propose to reserve St. Johns Harbour as a flying boat base. It is presumed that this reservation would also extend to the potential land aerodrome site, (n) British Guiana. The operations of Pan American Airways are at present conducted from a site on the Demerara River south of Georgetown Harbour. A local company also operates from a site at Georgetown.
