l&y 9, 1939. WAR DEPARTMENT §9 IMMEDIATE RELEASE VISIT OF GEMBRAL MARSHALL TO BRAZIL The Brazilian Government has invited Rrifcedier General George C. Marshall,Deputy Chief of Staff of the United States Army, recent- ly designated as Chief of Staff to succeed General Malin Craig, to visit Brazil during the latter part of May and the first days of June. General Marshall will sail from New York on the tJ. S. S* NASHVILLE May 10 for Brazil accompanied by the following staff: Colonel James E. Chaney, Air Corps. Lieutenant Colonel Lehman V/. Miller, Corps of Engineers* L&Jor Matthew B. Ridgway, (Infantry) General Staff Corps. Major Louis J. Compton, (Field Artillery) General Staff Corps. Captain Thomas North, Field Artillery. Two enlisted men. Present plans call for brief stops at San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, arriving in Rio de Janeiro on May 26. After a stay of approximately two weeks in Brazil, General Marshall and his staff will again embark on the U. S. S. NASHVILIE, This Government has invited the Chief of Staff of the Brazilian Army, General Goes Monteiro, to visit the United States. General Goes ilonteiro and his immediate staff will accompany General Marshall and his staff on their return voyage to the United States on the U. S. S. NASHVILLE. Upon its departure from Rio de Janeiro the tJ. S. S. NA£HVIII£ will proceed directly to the United States, probably to Annapolis, arriving on or about June 22.
