No. N.A. 155 29th May, 1939. GRAVE OP BRITISH NAVAL OFFICERS AND MEN ON SANDY HOOK, N.J. With reference to my predecessors N.A. 298 of 3rd i&u&ust, 1936, and to I.D. Reference Sheet No. 120 I (N.I.D./N.1/2991/36) of 23rd December, 1936. The enclosed photographs of the Memorial and plaque which have "been erected on the site of the burial place of Naval Officers and men of H.M.S. "ASSISTANCE*, who died on 51st December, 1783. From the correspondence which took place between the Admiralty and Lord Morton, it would not appear that the latter took any interest in the matter. The monument was erected in 1938 on the military reservation at Fort Hancock, under the direction of Colonel L. B. Magruder, the then Commandant, and since then the present Commandant, Colonel Forrest E. Williford, 7th Coast Artillery, has arranged for the erection of a bronze plaque on the Memorial, and has added a little park around the site, the photographs of which he forwarded. I have written to Colonel Williford, expressing appreciation and thanks on behalf of the Admiralty, but I would submit that a further expression of Their Lordships1 gratitude would be appreciated. Their... Their Majesties,the King and Queen, will be passing this aite when proceeding through Fort Hancock en route to New York on June 10th, and endeavour will be made to have their attention drawn to it.
