5 Copy (A 4832/4832/45) No. N.L. 2069/39, Admiralty, S.W.I. 12th July, 1939. Sir, I am commanded toy My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to transmit herewith for the information of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, a copy of correspondence with H.M. Naval Attache at Washington, concerning the restoration of the monument erected on the grave in Fort Hancock Military Reservation, Sandy Hook, New Jersey, which is believed to contain the remains of officers and men "belonging to H.M.S. ASSISTANCE who lost their lives in 1783. No reply was received from the Earl of Morton to Admiralty letter N.L. 2991/36 dated 28th September, 1936, and in view of his apparent lack of interest, My Lords do not propose to communicate further with him in the matter. It is apparent from the photographs enclosed with the Naval Attache's letter dated 29th May, that the United States Military authorities at Fort Hancock have been put to considerable expense in erecting the new monument and plaque, and My Lords would be glad, provided the Secretary of State sees no objection, if H.M. Ambassador at Washington could be asked to convey an expression of their appreciation and thanks to the Commandant... The Under-Secretary of State, Foreign Office. 6 Commandant, 7th Coast Artillery, Port Hancock, for the kind gesture on the part of the U.S. Military authorities in perpetuating the memory of those of the crew of H.M.8. ASSISTANCE who lost their lives off Sandy Hook in 1783. I am, etc., (Signed) H. Eastwood.
