My Lord* With reference to Sir H- Our nay's despatch 177 of the 9th June to Your Lordship regarding the visit of General George 0. Harshall to Brazil, I have the honour to report that* as announced, General Marshall returned to the United states bring- ing with him General Pedro Aurelio Odes Monteiro, Chief of Staff of the Brazilian Army. They landed from the U.s.S. "Nashville" on June SOth at Annapolis, Maryland, where the visitor was received by a dis- tinguished party of American military officers headed by General Malin Craig, then Chief of staff* Mr* Adolf A. Berle was present as representative of the Secretary of state* 2* General Goes Monteiro's prograimne thereafter is given In the attached communiqu6 issued by the War Department on June 19th. Your Lordship will observe) that he and his staff made a general tour of the United States in three array air-transports* visiting military establishments in all parts of the country. According llll to the press, part of hlesstaff sailed for Brazil on the 14th July* but the General himself and the rest of hie staff did not leave until July 2Lst, when they sailed from New York la the S. "Southern Prince1** Copies of a State Department release giving the texts of/ VAIM:RVR:CB:ACEMxNT The Sight Honourable the Viscount Halifax* K. &•» ?fv V etc., etc., etc. ¦SMMMttM 3 i -2- of telegrams exchanged by the General and President Roosevelt on the former's departure from this country are enclosed. 9* She press did not pay very great attention to General Odea Montelro after ha had been in the country a few days and there was no editorial comment oa the occasion of his final departure* perhaps he- cause his last ten days had been spent privately sightseeing in Hew York aad at the World's Pair* The Military Attache does not consider that any special significance need be attached to this visit beyond, of course* the rumour which has already been reported to Your Lordship, in paragraph 8 of my despatch No. 594 of the 50th Mays regarding General Goes Montelro*s invitation to Germany* It appears* however* to have bean the object of the United states nor merely to return the very lavish hospitality which was extended Marshall in Brazil but also to give General Goes Montelro a thorough demonstration of American military strength. Not only did General Goes Montelro visit the very best Army posts but Oolonel Read was informed by the Commanders at each post which he reoently visited in the West and the South that they had reoeived special instructions from the War Department that General Montelro was to be received with the highest honour* courtesy and hospitality* 4* X am. sending a copy of this despatch to His Majesty's Ambassador at Rio de Janeiro* ¦ Z have the honour to be* with the highest respect, My Lord, Your Lordship's most obedient, humble servant.
