STATEMENT BY THE SECRETARY OP STATE
I wish to express my profound appreciation and the
gratitude of the American Government for the prompt aid
and invaluable assistance rendered in rescuing American
survivors of the S.S. Athenia by the personnel of the
Norwegian vessel S.S. Knute Nelson, of the Swedish
vessel S.S. Southern Cross, and by the British Navy.
I also wish to extend our sincere thanks to those
officials and private persons in Eire and Scotland who
have shown the utmost kindness and thoughtful aid to the
survivors slnc« they arrived at their ports.
