With reference to my despatch No*
133 of the 10th January, I have the honour to
report ^hut the President has appointed Hr#
Clarence      Gauss to be the first United
States Minister to Australia and thet the
appointment was confirmed by the senate on
the 11th January.
2. UTm oauss, who is a career Foreign
Service officer, has until recently been United
States Consul General at Shanghai,    i understend
that he has spent most of his official career in
the Par   .ast, although he was employed for a
period in the United States Consulate General
in Paris.
