38. H. U. S. WELLINGTON informs me that recent comprehensive
exploration of Canton Jgland(s) indicates great possibilities
for development as aircraft "base for all types of machines.
This equally well known to the U..S.A. Officers and scientists
party and possi"bly accounts for their refusal to recognise
the claim of British Sovereignty vide H.M.S. WELLINGTON'S
2201   26th May.    As H.M.S. WELLINGTON left Canton Island
"before United States Minesweeper AVOCET, I shall visit PHOENIX
Group in H. M. Ship ACHILLES when on passage from Honolulu to
SUVA early in August.
