I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your
esteemed note of June 10, 1940, conveying the formal
request of the British Government that the Government
of the United States undertake to protect the persons,
property and interests for whose protection the British
Ambassador in Italy and consular officers under his
superintendence are normally responsible.
As I was happy to advise you by my note of June 4,
appropriate instructions giving effect to the British
Government's wishes in this respect have been sent to
the Department's representatives in Italy.
