In view of presence of representatives
of Bermuda committee in   'ashin^ton following is
brief reply to your letter of October 2nd. Full
reply follows by post.     Alternative air base site
fh approved by Governor and myself.   Air base on
Long Bird Island should coat no more or take

represent feeling of who* le island and is very
genuine.   Local opinion favour east end of island
but dislikes any land air base.   If land air base
abandoned, local opinion still wishes flying boat
and naval base to be at east end but personally
consider case (?not) too strong (?in comparison^
and American desire for flying base in Great
Sound hard to counter.
