London. August 1. British Ambassador to Turkey reports confidentially that Turkey has given evidences of the closest sympathy with the Allied cause, Greek and British military personnel which escaped from Greece to Turkey, have been handed over to the British M/A for evacuation, whereas German and Italian military personnel in the same situation have been interned. On July 23, the Turkish General Staff requested urgently that secret staff conversations be initiated in anticipation of a fterman attack on Turkey, stating that Turkey's period of indecision has passed and that Turkey knows that no trust can be placed in the Germane regardless of Treaty promises. Both the General Staff and the President himself have indicated most definitely that Turkey considers the British-Turkish Treaty as the foundation of Turkish policy. The British Ambassador urges that Turkey be given prompt and adequate material assistance so that she can arm herself and be In a position to fulfill her part of the British-Turkish Treaty.
