Additional Information:This study forms part of the Maraca Rainforest Project, organised by the Royal Geographical Society of London, and led by the author, at the invitation of the Brazilian environment secretariat SEMA (now part of IBAMA), in co-operation with the Amazon research institute INPA, Manaus. The research was done with help from a personal grant from The British Academy.
