Additional Information:James Dunkerley is Director of the Institute of Latin Studies, University of London; he also holds a chair in politics at Queen Mary and Westfield College. He has been joint-editor of the Journal of Latin American Studies since 1998. This paper was first presented at the inaugural lecture given by Professor Dunkerley as Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies, held at Senate House, University of London on 1 June 1999.
