Abstract
Referring to sayings from revered figures of the past has always been a very delicate and controversial matter so special techniques and methods have been developed in order to quote them persuasively. The paper sets out to investigate the origin and afterlife of a particular type of quotation-technique which might provide us with the key to understand the appearance of apocryphal dialogue and its staged version the medieval drama.
