Abstract
The researcher traces the history of the divided damper-rail from London-built square pianos of the 1760s. He demonstrates a number of passages in Mendelssohn's piano writing which require the divided pedal, also mentioning other aspects of performance that are affected by early piano design, including fingering and rhythmic distortion. This item includes downloadable transcript and image files.
