Abstract
The Laws of King Aethelberht, dating from c. 600 AD shortly after the evangelizing mission of St. Augustine, are the first law code promulgated in England in the English language. The equivalent codes of the Continental post-Roman kingdoms are written in Latin. The thesis examines the historical, political and cultural context of the laws, and includes detailed paleographical and linguistic analysis of the text and an examination of its specific provisions.
